Home for the Holidays: A Guide to Holiday Decorating

Is it too early to queue up the Christmas tunes, string up the lights, and dazzle our homes with the scent of Christmas cookies? It depends on who you ask. But if it's us, we will tell you to always go with your intuition.

The holiday season signifies something remarkably different for everyone, which means the rules are also different — mostly in that there are none. If it’s been a tough year and you need a little extra sparkle early on, we say go ahead; dig out the ornaments, and light the tree tomorrow. If you’re someone who waits until the perfect night in December arrives, don’t lose sight of the magic in that tradition. The holidays are all about the beauty they hold and the unmistakable, unforgettable memories they restore to our subconscious each year.

In keeping with the cozy season vibes, here are a few of our favorite ways to encapsulate the magic of the holidays in your own home!

1.) Dashing through the pillows

Pops of colors, unique patterns, and themed accents can add a breath of fresh air to your space this holiday season. One of the easiest ways to spice up your home is with accent pillows. For a more subdued look, style your couch with two gray pillows and one red. For an ultra-cozy feeling and more contrast, add in two dark green pillows. You can also mix it up by swapping out the colors in an unexpected way — like plum and gold or rose and orange! Whichever color combo you choose, these subtle festive accents can really manifest the holiday spirit.

2.) Po-po-potpourri, candles, and incense

There is nothing quite like the smell of freshly baked gingerbread cookies — and a myriad of other wintry scents — to get you into the holiday spirit. To relieve you from the pressure of baking these aromas into existence, candles and incense are great ways to replicate the smell of pine needles, cinnamon, hot chocolate, peppermint, and more. Alternatively, a potpourri bowl filled with nutmeg and cloves can subtly enhance your space when hosting guests.

3.) DIY: Decorate it yourself!

For us, the holiday season is a time for joy, family, and getting crafty! Whether you want to save money on decorations this year or just want something new and fun to do with the kids, creating personalized holiday cards, handmade snowflakes, and gingerbread houses are a few of our favorite DIY décor ideas for the season!

4.) O holy lights

Do you love sitting on your porch with a warm cup of coffee and cozy blanket as the sun rises? How about sipping cocktails beside the glow of the fireplace? Us too! To add some extra joy and a festive touch to these moments, we recommend stringing up lights. From a warm white glow to bright pops of color, string lights can transform your coziest spaces into your own winter wonderland.

5.) Bring the outdoors, in

Easy to adhere to your staircase, headboard, or fireplace mantle, these nature-inspired adornments bring the wonder of the outdoors, in. Garlands have a magical quality about them — something like feeling as if you were in your favorite Christmas movie. The best part about garlands is the number of styles they come in. Think: traditional pine, dried citrus, faux rosemary, and beaded. The options are limitless!

6.) Display those holiday cards for all to see

What could be better than sharing the holidays with those who mean the most? Whether they are near or far, arranging the holiday cards you receive on a corkboard, the fridge, or an empty wall, can make it feel like you are all together. It is also a great conversation starter when you have guests over — How did the Jones family like Italy? The Smith’s new pup is too cute! These handmade snowflake cards Marissa sent look awesome! It’s these little moments that bring us together, which is exactly what the holidays are all about!
